The echidna is one of Australia’s most unique animals, often mistaken for a hedgehog but biologically very different. These spiny, solitary creatures are monotremes—egg-laying mammals—and can be found foraging for ants and termites throughout the Tuross peninsula. They are most commonly seen in warmer months, especially in spring and early summer, and one local echidna likes to trek across the Tuross main beach most afternoons in the warmer months!
The Tuross area is home to many beautiful species of birdlife, including rosellas, white bellied sea eagles, pied oystercatchers, king parrots, kookaburras and white-headed pigeons. You may even catch a glimpse of an emu or two roaming the area; originally imported into the private gardens of Horse Island, a few swam to the mainland and have been slowly multiplying ever since!
You can find both kangaroos and wallabies in Tuross Head, especially in coastal habitats like the Bingi Dreaming Track and near lakeshores. They are often seen grazing in the late afternoon around the camping sites in our park and are also frequently spotted along the lake and beaches, so be alert for them while walking, picnicking, or even driving, particularly at dawn and dusk.
You’ll see plenty of Eastern Water Dragons sunning themselves on the rocks around the park, often coming out in large numbers towards sunset. They are shy creatures and will flee when people approach them. Water dragons are not dangerous, but they do have sharp teeth & claws – do not attempt to feed them! They are a protected species in Australia.
From October – March, ticks may be present in the area. They are found in long grassed areas, dense vegetation and wooded areas, especially after rain. In our park, the dense vegetation near the Eastern public entry to the beach has been known to harbour ticks; so, take care to remain on the open mown paths when walking through this area.
The NSW south coast is home to a range of snake species – many are venomous, but bites are extremely rare, as snakes are generally shy and prefer to avoid human interaction. In particular, the area is home to red-bellied black snakes, which are particularly timid creatures. These reptiles can occasionally be found basking in the sun, on the rocks near the beach, and on walking tracks or in bushland, particularly during the warmer months from October to March.
• Watch carefully where you walk, especially in bush areas.
• Avoid long grass and areas with rocks or sticks.
• Stay alert and be especially aware of pets and children.
• Don’t panic! Stand very still. Snakes do not see you as food or a threat and will likely move on.
• If the snake is lying still, back away very slowly.
• Do NOT approach, scare, or try to hit the snake — this is what usually leads to bites.
• Stay calm – venom spreads through movement.
• If safe, take a photo of the snake for identification and send it to: [email protected]
• Lie down and stay as still as possible.
• Apply a pressure bandage around the bite area – do NOT use a tourniquet.
• Seek medical help as soon as possible. Call emergency services on 000.
